Overview

Toilet repairs & blocked toilets: What You Need to Know

What toilet repairs cover

Clearing blockages in the pan and waste, repairing or replacing fill valves, flush valves and siphons, fixing leaks between the cistern and pan or at the base, and replacing worn seals and buttons.

Who it is for

Households with one toilet who can't be without it, landlords dealing with tenant reports, and businesses where a broken toilet affects staff and customers.

When you need it

When the water rises instead of draining, the cistern keeps running or refilling, the flush is weak or needs several goes, water appears around the base, or the handle or button no longer works.

Why professional help matters

Repeated plunging or chemical drain cleaners can make things worse or damage seals. Fitting the wrong valve can cause constant running. A proper diagnosis fixes the actual fault.

Why it can't wait

What Happens If It's Ignored

  • A blocked toilet can overflow, which is unhygienic and can damage floors and ceilings below.
  • A constantly running cistern wastes a large amount of water, especially on a meter.
  • A leaking base seal can rot floorboards and stain ceilings below without much visible sign.
  • Repeated blockages can point to a problem further down the waste pipe that gets worse over time.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Flushing again when the water is already rising. This is how toilets overflow.
  • Flushing wipes, including 'flushable' ones, which are a common cause of blockages.
  • Pouring strong chemicals in, which can damage seals and are hazardous if the pan then needs clearing by hand.
  • Ignoring a small leak at the base.

In detail

Toilet repairs & blocked toilets, Explained

Toilet problems tend to fall into a few categories. This is how each is handled.

Blocked pans and waste

Most blockages are in the pan's trap or the short waste run. They are cleared with the right equipment, and the cause is identified so you know whether it's likely to recur.

Fill valves

If the cistern keeps filling or hisses, the fill valve or float is usually at fault. Replacing it with the correct type for your cistern fixes it.

Flush valves and siphons

Push-button cisterns use flush valves; older lever cisterns use siphons. Worn seals cause a constant trickle into the pan. These parts can be replaced.

Close-coupled seals

Where the cistern sits on the pan, the seal and bolts between them can leak. Replacing the seal stops the drip.

Pan connectors and base leaks

Water around the base often means a failed pan connector to the waste. This is replaced and the pan resecured.

Homes and commercial washrooms

Commercial toilets are used heavily, so durable parts and minimal downtime matter. Both domestic and commercial work is covered.

Useful Advice Before We Arrive

What should and shouldn't go down a toilet

Only toilet paper and human waste. Wipes, including those labelled flushable, cotton buds, sanitary products, kitchen roll and cooking fat are the most common causes of blockages. In homes with young children, toys and small objects are another regular culprit. If you share a house or run a business, a simple note in the bathroom can prevent repeat call-outs.

If your toilet is blocked right now

Don't flush again. If the water level is high, wait for it to settle. Put towels down around the base. If the toilet is your only one, or water is rising or overflowing, call or WhatsApp us. A short video of the pan and what happens when you try to flush helps us work out whether it's a simple blockage or something further down the pipe.

When the cistern keeps running

A cistern that never seems to stop filling, or that you can hear trickling into the pan, is wasting water around the clock. It's usually caused by a worn fill valve or flush valve seal. These are standard parts that can be replaced, and the fix often pays for itself quickly on a metered supply.

Pricing & payment

Know What You're Paying Before Work Starts

Quotes are provided before work begins wherever possible, so you can decide with the full picture. Fixed prices are preferred, because they give you certainty. Some jobs are charged on time and materials where the work is more complex or the full extent of the problem can't be seen until it's opened up.

Emergency and diagnostic work may be priced after inspection, because the cause isn't always visible until we are on site. Either way, you'll be told what is needed and why before further work goes ahead.

For larger jobs, a deposit may be required depending on the job and the cost of materials. Payment is by bank transfer or cash. Card payments are not taken.
