Overview
Radiator installation & removal: What You Need to Know
What the service covers
Fitting new or replacement radiators and towel rails, swapping radiators for different sizes or styles, fitting new valves, temporarily removing radiators for decorating, and removing radiators permanently with pipework capped off.
Who it is for
Homeowners updating rooms, people decorating who need a radiator taken off the wall, landlords replacing tired radiators, and businesses refitting premises.
When you need it
When a radiator is leaking, rusted or damaged, when you're redecorating or renovating, when you want a towel rail in the bathroom, or when a room layout changes.
Why professional fitting matters
Radiators are heavy and need secure brackets. Valves and tails must be correctly sealed, and the system needs bleeding and refilling properly. Poor fitting leads to leaks, noise and cold spots.

Why it can't wait
What Happens If It's Ignored
- A leaking radiator valve can drip slowly onto floors for months, damaging boards and carpets.
- Rusted radiators can eventually pin-hole and leak.
- Poorly secured radiators can pull away from the wall.
- Removing a radiator without capping pipework properly can lead to leaks when the system is refilled.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying a replacement without checking the pipe centres match the existing pipework.
- Hanging radiators on brackets not suited to the wall type.
- Reusing old, worn valves on a new radiator.
- Not bleeding the system afterwards, leaving air and cold spots.
Our process

In detail
Radiator installation & removal, Explained
Radiator work varies depending on what you have and what you want. Here are the common jobs.
Like-for-like replacement
Where pipe centres match, a new radiator can often be swapped in with minimal alteration.
Different sizes and styles
Changing to a different width or height usually means adjusting pipework so the valves line up.
Heated towel rails
Replacing a bathroom radiator with a towel rail, or swapping old rails for new ones. One reviewer had two towel rails removed and replaced.
Valves
Replacing old manual or thermostatic radiator valves that are leaking or seized.
Temporary removal for decorating
Taking a radiator off so walls can be plastered, papered or painted, then refitting it.
Permanent removal
Removing a radiator and capping the pipework neatly and securely.
What isn't included
Mase Plumbing 24/7 does not carry out any gas or boiler work.

Useful Advice Before We Arrive
Measuring for a replacement radiator
Measure the distance between the centres of the two pipes coming out of the floor or wall. This is the pipe centre measurement, and matching it makes a like-for-like swap much simpler. Also note the height and width of the space and anything nearby, such as sockets, skirting or furniture. If you're changing size, send us photos and measurements so we can tell you how much pipework will need adjusting.
Radiators and decorating
Painting or papering behind a radiator is much easier with it off the wall. We can remove it, cap or isolate the pipework, and refit it once you're finished. Tell us your decorating timeline in advance so the removal and refit fit around your plans.
Towel rails in bathrooms
Swapping a bathroom radiator for a heated towel rail is a popular upgrade. It frees up wall space and keeps towels warm and dry. The main considerations are the pipe positions, the wall type for secure fixing, and choosing a rail that suits the room size.
Pricing & payment
Know What You're Paying Before Work Starts
Quotes are provided before work begins wherever possible, so you can decide with the full picture. Fixed prices are preferred, because they give you certainty. Some jobs are charged on time and materials where the work is more complex or the full extent of the problem can't be seen until it's opened up.
Emergency and diagnostic work may be priced after inspection, because the cause isn't always visible until we are on site. Either way, you'll be told what is needed and why before further work goes ahead.
For larger jobs, a deposit may be required depending on the job and the cost of materials. Payment is by bank transfer or cash. Card payments are not taken.
