Emergency plumbing & call-outs: What You Need to Know
What an emergency call-out covers
An emergency plumbing call-out is for the problems that can't sit until next week: a pipe that has split and is spraying water, a leak coming through a ceiling, a toilet that is overflowing, or water you can't turn off. We attend, makes the situation safe, finds the cause and repairs it, or puts a sound temporary fix in place if parts are needed.
Who it is for
Homeowners, tenants, landlords and businesses across Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, Bedford, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Whether it is a family home in Raunds, a rental flat in Wellingborough or a shop unit in Northampton, the aim is the same: stop the water, protect the property and get things working again.
When you need it
If water is escaping and you can't control it, if it is near electrics, if it is coming through a ceiling, or if you have lost your water supply, treat it as an emergency. If you're unsure, send us a photo or short video on WhatsApp. We can see what's happening and tell you whether it needs attention now.
Why a professional matters
In an emergency, the quick fix that holds for an hour is not the same as a repair that holds for years. Tape, filler and over-tightened fittings often fail again, usually at the worst moment. A proper repair means the right fitting, the right pipe and a tested joint, so you are not calling out again next week.

Why it can't wait
What Happens If It's Ignored
- A burst pipe can release a large volume of water in a short time. Floors, ceilings, plaster and electrics can all be damaged, and the longer it runs the bigger the repair bill for the building itself.
- Water that soaks into ceilings and walls can lead to damp, staining and mould that appear long after the leak itself has been fixed.
- Leaks near light fittings, sockets or consumer units are a safety risk, not just a mess.
- For landlords and businesses, an unresolved leak can mean tenants without water, closed premises and complaints that escalate quickly.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not knowing where the stopcock is. Find it now, before you need it. It is often under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cloakroom or where the water main enters the property.
- Wrapping a split pipe in tape and leaving it. It might slow the leak, but it is not a repair.
- Waiting to see if it gets worse. Leaks rarely fix themselves, and hidden water keeps spreading.
- Using electrics near the water. If water is near sockets or lights, keep clear and switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so.

In detail
Emergency plumbing & call-outs, Explained
Emergencies come in different forms. Here is what we typically deals with on an emergency call-out, and how each is handled.
Burst and split pipes
Pipes can split from frost, corrosion, old joints giving way or accidental damage from drilling and nails. Copper pipework is usually repaired by cutting out the damaged section and fitting a new length with compression or push-fit fittings, depending on location and access. Plastic pipework is repaired with the correct matched fittings. The repair is then pressure tested.
Leaks through ceilings
Water appearing through a ceiling usually comes from a bathroom, a pipe in the floor void or a failed seal above. The job is to find the true source, which may be some distance from the stain. Isolating the supply first prevents further damage while the cause is traced.
Overflowing toilets and cisterns
A cistern that won't stop filling, or a toilet that overflows, is usually down to a failed fill valve, a stuck float or a blockage. These can often be repaired on the same visit.
Stopcocks that won't turn off
Old stopcocks seize up and often fail exactly when you need them. If yours won't turn, we can isolate the supply another way and replace the stopcock so you can control your water in future.
Loss of water supply
No water to taps can be caused by a closed or failed valve, a leak elsewhere in the property, or an issue on the supply side. We will check what is within the property and tell you clearly if the problem lies with the water supplier.
Homes and commercial premises
In a home, the priority is protecting rooms and belongings. In commercial premises, it is often about keeping the business open, so isolating only the affected area and keeping toilets and kitchens working where possible. Both domestic and commercial emergencies are covered.
What emergency work does not include
Mase Plumbing 24/7 does not carry out any gas work. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
Practical guide
Useful Advice Before We Arrive
What to do in the first five minutes
Turn off the water at the stopcock. If the leak is near electrics, switch off at the consumer unit only if you can reach it safely without standing in water. Open cold taps to drain the system and reduce pressure on the damaged pipe. Move belongings away, put towels and buckets down, then call or WhatsApp us with a photo or video so we can see what we're coming to.
Pricing & payment
Know What You're Paying Before Work Starts
Quotes are provided before work begins wherever possible, so you can decide with the full picture. Fixed prices are preferred, because they give you certainty. Some jobs are charged on time and materials where the work is more complex or the full extent of the problem can't be seen until it's opened up.
Emergency and diagnostic work may be priced after inspection, because the cause isn't always visible until we are on site. Either way, you'll be told what is needed and why before further work goes ahead.
For larger jobs, a deposit may be required depending on the job and the cost of materials. Payment is by bank transfer or cash. Card payments are not taken.
